Casting the Actors

Choosing the Actors

Casting the actors for How We Used to Be was an important step in the pre-production process. Because the opening sequence contains very little dialogue, the actors needed to be able to express emotion through subtle facial expressions, body language, and reactions.

The story focuses on a relationship that once felt happy and carefree but is now experiencing a painful breakup. Because of this, the actors needed to convincingly portray both sides of the relationship. In the flashback scenes, the characters appear happy and relaxed, showing moments of laughter and connection. In contrast, the present-day scenes focus on sadness, confusion, and emotional distance.

Another important factor when choosing the actors was chemistry. Since the audience needs to believe that the characters once had a meaningful relationship, the actors needed to feel comfortable interacting with each other on screen. This helps make the flashback moments feel natural and believable.

Additionally, the actors were chosen because they fit the tone and style of the film. The story is meant to feel grounded and realistic, so the performances needed to reflect genuine emotions rather than exaggerated reactions.

Overall, selecting the right actors helps strengthen the emotional impact of the opening sequence and supports the visual storytelling used throughout the film.
