Tone & Direction

Production Background: Tone & Direction

For this stage of production, I am focusing on establishing the tone and visual style of my short film before confirming actors and locations. The story centers on a modern breakup that happens over text, highlighting emotional distance and miscommunication.

The narrative will use parallel editing to contrast how both characters handle the aftermath differently — one isolating herself in stillness, the other moving through public spaces but remaining mentally distracted. This contrast will visually represent internal conflict without relying heavily on dialogue.

Symbolism will play a key role in the mise-en-scène. The ice cream shop acts as a reminder of shared memories, while elements like rain and damaged flowers represent vulnerability and regret. I also plan to use warmer tones in flashbacks and cooler tones in present scenes to clearly separate timelines.

At this point, my focus is ensuring that every visual and sound choice supports the emotional atmosphere of the film.
