Planning the Production Schedule

In order to successfully film the opening sequence of How We Used to Be, creating a detailed production schedule was an important part of pre-production. Since lighting plays a large role in the emotional tone of the film, the timing of the shoot had to be carefully planned around sunset and nighttime.

Filming is scheduled for Sunday, March 7th, 2026, beginning in the early evening and continuing into the night. The opening walking scenes will be filmed around golden hour, when the sun is beginning to set. This lighting creates a soft and natural look that helps establish the emotional tone of the scene while also providing strong cinematic visuals.

As the sun sets, the production will move into the twilight period, where the lighting begins to transition from day to night. These shots will be used for the scenes where the main character continues walking through town after receiving the breakup text message. The gradual darkening of the environment visually reflects the character’s emotional shift.

Finally, the later scenes will be filmed at night, including the ice cream shop moment and the final doorstep scene. The night setting allows for natural lighting from streetlights and storefronts, helping create a quiet and reflective atmosphere.

Organizing the shoot around these lighting changes allows the story to visually progress from warmth to darkness, reinforcing the emotional journey of the characters.
